Scholarships
Students across the Hampton Roads area work hard to earn top marks, dreaming of the college they will attend and the education they will receive. Unfortunately, many of these students will not be able to afford it.
We want these students to reach their full potential. To help them accomplish this, The Friends of Hampton Roads, Inc. offers scholarships to graduating African-American high school seniors, who are in financial need, and have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and plan to attend a four year college. Also, in 2010, a special scholarship was created in the memory of one of our founders, Dr. Katherine A. Treherne. This scholarship was awarded every two years to one or two second year medical students who we feel exemplifies the fine qualities of such a dedicated physician and community servant as Dr. Treherne. Since 1989, more than $737,000 have been awarded to these scholarships.
In 2025, the members of the Friends of Hampton Roads elected to turn funds over to The Hampton Roads Community Foundation for management. However, the fund is still named "The Friends of Hampton Roads". Please see their website for inquires. Also, the members elected to create an endowed scholarship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in the memory of our founder Dr. Katherine A. Treherne.
